Kitagawa Utamaro
Kitagawa Utamaro and the Female Face of Ukiyo-e
Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753-1806) was one of the greatest masters of Japanese ukiyo-e, specializing in bijin-ga, portraits of women. Working closely with publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō, he established large-format series centered on the face, the ōkubi-e, with elongated, individualized features that broke with the idealized images of the past, as shown by Shira-uchikake - The White Overcoat. He produced more than two thousand prints, and his work, which reached Europe in the mid-19th century, had a profound influence on the Impressionists, from Degas to Toulouse-Lautrec. Bringing one of these prints into your home means preserving that exploration, not filling an empty space.
Crafted to last
Every Framed Art Print is made with fine art paper, then finished and framed by hand in Italy. We do not pursue an immediate effect: we seek a finish that remains faithful to the original colors over time, because a work intended to be passed down deserves a foundation as solid as the story it tells.
