Melchior Tavernier II
Melchior Tavernier and 17th-century cartography
Melchior Tavernier (1594-1665) was an engraver and publisher of maps, belonging to a dynasty active in Paris between the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1618, he obtained the title of engraver and printer to the king, and from his workshop on the Pont au Change he published works by cartographers such as Henri Hondius, Jan Jansson, and Nicolas Sanson, helping establish Paris as a European center of the map trade. Among his works is the Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula, one of the great general maps of the world of its time, along with city plans of places such as Paris and Toulouse. Bringing one of these prints into your home means preserving that spirit of inquiry, not filling an empty space.
Crafted to last
Each Framed Art Print is made with fine art paper, then finished and framed by hand in Italy. We do not chase an immediate effect: we seek a rendering that remains faithful to the original colors over time, because a work intended to be passed down deserves a foundation as solid as the history it tells.
