Alexej von Jawlensky

From landscape to the human face: the painter who transformed a head into pure form and color.
Alexej von Jawlensky (1864-1941), a Russian painter who became a German citizen, was one of the leading figures of European Expressionism. After studying at the Academy of St. Petersburg, he moved to Munich in 1896, where he came into contact with Wassily Kandinsky and Marianne von Werefkin and helped establish the Der Blaue Reiter group. His painting evolved from landscapes with dense, vibrant colors toward a gradual abstraction of the human face, culminating in the series "Mystical Heads" and "Faces of the Savior," inspired by Russian Orthodox religious iconography. Arthritis forced him to give up painting in 1937. Museum Wiesbaden holds the most important collection of his works in Europe, comprising more than ninety paintings.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“A face reduced to a few shapes and a color that dominates everything: a symphony in pink, as Jawlensky called it.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
