Jan Ciągliński

Among the first impressionists in St. Petersburg, he painted while traveling from the Caucasus to the Sahara.
Jan Ciągliński (1858-1912/1913), a Polish painter born in Warsaw, trained at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, where he taught for nearly thirty years at the Drawing School of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts. Considered one of the first Impressionists active in Saint Petersburg, he developed a style based on vivid patches of color, later evolving toward broader, more expressive brushwork with an Art Nouveau sensibility. He traveled extensively through Crimea, the Caucasus, Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey, the Sahara, and the Middle East, documenting the places he visited in drawings and paintings. He founded the independent Refusés exhibitions (1894-1898) and taught students who later became leading figures of the Russian avant-garde, such as Tatlin and Filonov.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“The Greek Theatre of Syracuse in the evening, rendered in the quick brushstrokes of one of the first Russian Impressionists.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
