Léon Jean Joseph Dubois

He drew the deities of ancient Egypt for Champollion, then worked at the Louvre.
Léon-Jean-Joseph Dubois (1780-1846), a French draughtsman, lithographer, and archaeologist, trained as a painter in the workshops of Jacques-Louis David and Antoine-Jean Gros before devoting himself to scientific illustration. He became a collaborator of Jean-François Champollion, for whom he produced the plates for the 'Panthéon égyptien' (1823-1825), a collection of engravings dedicated to the deities of ancient Egypt, including Hathor, Thoueris, and Wadjet, and later became assistant curator of the Egyptian Department of the Louvre. In 1829, he took part in the Morea expedition to Greece led by Abel Blouet, which led to the discovery of the Temple of Olympian Zeus at Olympia and the first systematic archaeological excavations at Messene.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“Atum, the god who created the world for the Egyptians, here with the body of a heron. Dubois copied it from the monuments for Champollion.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
