Andreas Cellarius

Author of the “Harmonia Macrocosmica,” one of the most lavish celestial atlases ever printed.
Andreas Cellarius (circa 1596 - 1665), a German-born cartographer and mathematician, was born in Neuhausen but worked and died in Hoorn, the Netherlands, where he served as rector of the town’s Latin school. He is famous for the Harmonia Macrocosmica (1660), one of the most sumptuous celestial atlases ever published, issued in Amsterdam by Johannes Janssonius. It contains plates illustrating the various models of the universe developed over the centuries, from the Ptolemaic to the Copernican system, including the cosmology of ancient Greek astronomers such as Aratus of Soli. His engravings, embellished with allegorical figures and Baroque decorations, remain among the most widely reproduced images in the history of celestial cartography.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“The sky as the Greeks imagined it, engraved in Amsterdam in 1660. The constellations are those that Aratus sang in verse.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
