Shimizu Seifū

I illustrated traditional Japanese toys while they were at risk of disappearing.
Shimizu Seifū was a Japanese illustrator active between the end of the Meiji period and the beginning of the Taishō period, best known for the plates in the collection Unai no Tomo (Childhood Friends), published in Kyoto by the publisher Unsōdō from 1911 onward and edited by Yamada Naosaburō. The work, in several volumes, documents traditional Japanese toys and popular games through multicolored illustrations, associated with seasonal celebrations and regional customs, at a time when the country’s modernization threatened to make them disappear. Shimizu’s work belongs to the tradition of color illustration derived from ukiyo-e prints, applied to the documentation of children’s material culture. Few other biographical details about the author have survived.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“Paper, wooden, and clay toys, saved one by one by a collector from Tokyo. He called them playmates.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
