Frederic Leighton

The Victorian painter who brought ancient Greece back to life.
Frederic Leighton (1830-1896), British painter and sculptor, 1st Baron Leighton, was born in Scarborough and trained in Florence, Frankfurt, and Rome before settling in London. A leading figure in Victorian classical painting, he served as president of the Royal Academy from 1878 until his death, the culmination of a career devoted to an idealized evocation of the ancient Greek and Mediterranean world through a highly refined academic technique. Works such as Fiammetta and Flaming June made him famous for their compositional balance and luminous rendering of drapery, often the subject of meticulous preparatory studies such as those for Greek Girls Playing at Ball. Appointed a peer of the realm shortly before his death, he remains the only British artist to have received a peerage for just one day, and one of the foremost interpreters of Victorian classicism.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
