Owen Jones

The architect who collected the ornaments of the whole world in a single book.
Owen Jones (1809-1874), a British architect and design theorist, traveled to Spain, Egypt, and Turkey studying Islamic ornament, particularly the decorations of the Alhambra in Granada, which he documented using the pioneering technique of chromolithography. He oversaw the decorative design of the Crystal Palace for the 1851 Great Exhibition in London and collaborated with Henry Cole in founding the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 1856, he published 'The Grammar of Ornament', a systematic compendium of decorative motifs from different eras and cultures, still reprinted and used as a reference by designers and artists today. He was one of the leading proponents of Victorian design reform.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“Owen Jones gathered the ornaments of half the world into a single book. This is Greece, reduced to its rules of form and color.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
