The artist

1838 – 1925Ukiyo-e

George Ashdown Audsley

Architect and organ designer, he introduced Japanese decorative art to the West.
George Ashdown Audsley (1838-1925), a Scottish-born American architect, decorator, and writer, was also active as a pipe-organ designer. Born in Elgin and deceased in Bloomfield, New Jersey, he moved to the United States, where he designed churches, synagogues, and civic buildings. He authored major works on Japanese art, including The Keramic Art of Japan (1875), one of the earliest English-language studies of Japanese ceramics, and The Ornamental Arts of Japan, an extensive repertory of decorative motifs drawn from textiles, lacquerware, metalwork, and ceramics. His publications made a significant contribution to spreading an appreciation for Japanese art in Europe and North America during the second half of the nineteenth century.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“In 1882, Europe was discovering Japan. Audsley, an architect and organ designer, collected its ornamental designs in two large volumes.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
