Henry Roderick Newman

American painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelites, he portrayed Egyptian temples with archival precision.
Henry Roderick Newman (1843-1917) was an American painter of landscapes and still lifes, trained in the Pre-Raphaelite tradition. After abandoning his medical studies, he taught himself to paint in the United States before moving to Europe, settling permanently in Italy in 1870. In 1877, the critic John Ruskin praised his work, suggesting subjects to him and commissioning works. From 1887 onward, he spent several winters in Egypt, producing highly precise watercolors of ancient monuments, particularly the Temple of Philae, with an approach that was more documentary than Orientalist. In 1896-97, he also traveled to Japan, producing architectural and landscape views. He died in Florence in 1917.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“Every winter Newman left Florence for Egypt to paint the temples from life. John Ruskin also commissioned watercolors from him.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
