Hans Prinzhorn

The psychiatrist who collected over five thousand works by patients and paved the way for Art Brut.
Hans Prinzhorn (1886-1933) was a German psychiatrist and art historian, a key figure in studies of the creativity of mentally ill people. After initially studying philosophy and art history, he earned a medical degree in Heidelberg in 1919 with a dissertation on the artistic abilities of psychiatric patients. He then expanded a collection of works created by inmates of German asylums, bringing it to more than five thousand works by approximately four hundred and fifty artists: the collection that bears his name, now preserved at Heidelberg University. In 1922, he published Bildnerei der Geisteskranken (Art of the Mentally Ill), a pioneering work that directly influenced Jean Dubuffet and laid the foundations for the recognition of Art Brut and outsider art.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“It was not drawn by an artist, but by a patient who saw apparitions in the air. Prinzhorn kept that sheet, and many artists did not forget it.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
