George Barbier

One of the great fashion illustrators of Paris between Art Nouveau and Art Deco.
George Barbier (1882-1932), a French illustrator born in Nantes and who died in Paris, was one of the leading figures in the transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. He made his debut with a solo exhibition in 1911 and quickly became one of the foremost fashion illustrators of his time, collaborating with Gazette du Bon Ton and L'Illustration. He was among the founders of the Chevaliers du Bracelet, a group of illustrators trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. He also designed costumes for theater and ballet, jewelry, and wallpaper, and in the 1920s worked with Erté for the Folies Bergère. His elegant, stylized plates defined the imagery of Parisian fashion between the two world wars.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
