Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise

Prestigious interior designer in late-nineteenth-century France.
Jules-Edmond-Charles Lachaise, a French draughtsman and decorative architect active in the second half of the nineteenth century, died in 1897. Specializing in ornamental designs for prestigious interiors, he collaborated with the architect Eugène-Pierre Gourdet on important decorative commissions of the period, including the Hôtel Rothschild in Vienna and the Château de Béhourt, applying an eclectic repertoire that combined naturalistic floral motifs with classical elements, such as the Greek key, typical of the historicist taste widespread in late-nineteenth-century France. His design plates, including drawings for ceilings and wall decorations, document the professional practice of French draughtsmen-decorators of the period, key figures in the production of elegant interiors for the European upper bourgeoisie and aristocracy.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“A ceiling drawn in plan: a rose at the center, four large panels, and a Greek-key border, with blue and pink flowers in the corners.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
