Tsurusawa Tansaku

Painter from the Kanō school of Kyoto, associated with the imperial court.
Tsurusawa Tansaku was a Japanese painter active in the 18th century who died in 1797. He belonged to the Tsurusawa school, a branch of Kanō painting rooted in Kyoto and associated with the imperial court, which was authorized to provide artworks alongside the older Tosa and local Kanō schools. He produced albums and illustrated books in ink on paper, including a collection devoted to the horse, a subject valued in the Japanese painting tradition both for its decorative appeal and for its symbolic significance connected to the samurai world. Like the other masters of his school, he adhered to the compositional principles and brushwork techniques handed down through the Kanō tradition, applying them to naturalistic subjects rendered with formal rigor.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

“A horse turning to look at its tail, drawn in ink with a few brushstrokes. At the bottom, the artist’s red seal.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
