Nakayasu Shinzaburō

I curate the “Shin Zuan,” a pattern collection for Kyoto’s fine silks.
Nakayasu Shinzaburō was a Japanese publisher and designer active in Kyoto during the Meiji period. He was the editor of 'Shin Zuan' ('New Designs'), a twenty-volume collection published between 1891 and 1894 by the Shin Zuankai. Also known as 'Nishijin orimono shin zuan', the collection brought together decorative motifs intended for the Nishijin textile industry, the famous Kyoto district specializing in fine silk weaving. As with many authors of these Japanese late-nineteenth-century drawing manuals, Nakayasu Shinzaburō's dates of birth and death are not known with certainty; his work nevertheless remains a valuable testament to the relationship between decorative art, textile craftsmanship, and the visual culture of Meiji Japan.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

His works 1 operate

“Yellow-hearted chrysanthemums on a solid red background, among wavy aqua green, lilac, and yellow leaves: a motif designed to repeat endlessly.”

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
