The artist

1805 – 1878Illustration

Johann Baptist Sonderland

Düsseldorf illustrator with gentle humor, devoted to the books of his time.
Johann Baptist Sonderland (1805-1878) was a German painter, engraver, and illustrator who trained at the Düsseldorf Academy. He undertook study trips to France and the Netherlands, gathering sketches that became genre scenes characterized by good-natured inventiveness and gentle humor. He illustrated literary works of the period, including Robert Reinick’s Malerlieder and Carl Leberecht Immermann’s Münchhausen (1838), and produced numerous engravings for the Deaconess House in Kaiserswerth. In his later years, he devoted himself almost exclusively to book illustration, creating watercolors, lithographs, and decorative drawings, thereby contributing to the visual dissemination of German literature of his time.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
