Joaquín Torres García

The painter who sought a universal language made of grids and symbols.
Joaquín Torres García (1874-1949) was a Hispanic-Uruguayan painter and theorist, one of the key figures in Latin American geometric abstraction. After a long European career spanning Barcelona, Paris, and New York, marked by stained-glass windows, murals, and the founding of the Cercle et Carré group in Paris, he returned to Montevideo in 1934, where he developed the theory of Universal Constructivism: a geometric grid into which pictograms are inserted, reducing figures and objects to symbolic signs in a visual language regarded as universal. He founded the Escuela del Sur and the Taller Torres-García, training generations of Uruguayan artists; among his students in Barcelona was Joan Miró.

Some pieces have minor imperfections: they’re part of their history and soul. There’s nothing interesting about perfection.

Size Guide

VERTICAL FORMAT
The most natural format for portraits, figures, and compositions with a central focal point. Perfect above a console table, next to a door, or in a narrow hallway.

WIDE HORIZONTAL FORMAT
Ideal for landscapes, views, and panoramic scenes. It fits perfectly above a sofa, a bed’s headboard, or a sideboard.

SQUARE FORMAT
A balanced and essential format that suits almost any wall. Perfect on its own or combined with other artworks to create a small gallery.

Printing and Framing

The frame
Black, understated, made to last.
The frame is made of black wood, with a slim, square profile. A 5 cm white mat surrounds the artwork: a wide margin that lets the subject breathe and separates it from the frame. Glass protects the print and only catches a slight reflection when the light is bright.

The print
A sheet with weight and grain.
The artwork is printed on 250 g/m² fine art paper. The surface is matte with a slightly raised grain: it doesn’t reflect light, so the colors look the same from anywhere in the room. The weight and texture are those of a print made to last, not a poster.
